A Brief History of Huskisson
The British Colonial Secretary after whom Huskisson is named is remembered less for the perpetuation of his name by this main service centre and entry point for the Jervis Bay area than for the rather bizarre way in which he met his death.
Only a few years after the tiny settlement was named after him, William Huskisson was in conversation with, of all people, the Duke of Wellington at the opening of the Liverpool to Manchester railway line.
At this opening ceremony he was run down and killed by George Stephenson's recently invented steam engine, the 'Rocket'.
Huskisson was an established settlement by the 1840s and its sheltered position by the mouth of the Currumbene Creek encouraged the eventual development of a successful boat building industry
The boat builders's craft is remembered by a maritime museum and working dock where pride of place goes to the former Sydney Harbour ferry Lady Denman which was returned to Huskisson after being 'retired' from service.
Huskisson, now an historic shipbuilding, and fishing village sits at the most westerly edge of Jervis Bay, bordered by Currumbene and Moona Moona creeks. The township of Huskisson is a 15 minute drive south of Nowra that in turn is 2 hours south of Sydney.
Over the years the town has been modernised without losing the charm of a once bustling shipbuilding and fishing village.
Huskisson presents a variety of shops, restaurants, a medical centre, fishing tackle, Golf courses, Fitness Centres, Dolphin Watch Cruises, Lawn Bowls and a range of Clubs
